How to Paint a Refrigerator Stainless Steel - Tips & Tricks

Can you paint a refrigerator stainless steel? The answer is yes! Painting a refrigerator with liquid stainless-steel paint or spray paint is a great way to change the look of a refrigerator for a fraction of the cost of buying a new one. The process can be very time-consuming, messy and frustrating. Below, we will walk you through how to paint a fridge:

There are two options:
  • Spray Paint
  • Brush-On Paint
First, you will need to buy all the necessary supplies for the job:
  • Stainless-Steel Fridge Paint
  • Tape
  • Gloves
  • Masks
  • Drop Cloths
  • Paint Thinner (for Cleanup)
If you choose the brush-on option:
  • Rollers
  • Paint Trays
Spray painting a refrigerator requires taping off handles, water and ice maker, rubbery plastic between the doors, and breathers on the top and/or bottom of the fridge. This also requires the room to have proper ventilation so you do not breathe in the harmful fumes. The fridge will take several coats of paint, and you have to let each coat dry thoroughly before applying another coat to prevent running and drips.

Brush-on paint, like Liquid Stainless Steel, has larger flakes of stainless steel mixed in for a brushed, shiny satin finish. It takes three full coats to cover one appliance, and you have to use a roller to apply the paint, and then you need to drag a special foam brush through it to create the finish. It can be a bit tricky, and if not done properly, it can make the finish look very unnatural.
